Email Client Configuration - Mozilla Thunderbird Filters

Start Thunderbird, and select Tools - Message Filters... from the menu.

To begin with, you will see this empty list of filters. This is where you can see all your filters. Click on New.

A new filter rule window will pop up. By setting all the fields of this window, you can create a new filter.

Here's one of my favorite rules. This one moves spam into a spam folder on the server, from your Inbox. The rule already has "subject" selected. Just click in the text box on the right and type "*****SPAM*****". Then check the "Move to folder", and select a folder on the server to move it into. You can also create a new folder right here, if you need to.

Here's the spam rule just before saving. Click OK to save it.

Here's another good rule. The new virus checker may send you a lot of warnings. This rule puts those messages into a "virusalert" folder for you. Note that you have to choose "Sender:" in the first column, then type "virusalert@cmrr.umn.edu" in the third column. At to bottom, select a "virusalert" folder to put the messages into. I would create these folders on the server, so you can get to them from any computer you are on.

Once you've created and saved these two filter rules, you will see them in this list, checked as active. You can deactivate them or edit them later, if you want, from this screen.

And that's it! Your email is getting sorted out of your Inbox automatically, every time you read email from this computer. You can add more rules to do more sorting at any time. If you have any questions or problems, feel free to ask one of us in the CRG.
